Birds, Birds, Birds!

A lot of people feel that birds will be great pets. The feeling is that birds are easy to take care of and do not need much more than feeding and cleaning of their cages. Well, this old adage can not be more wrong. Here are a few hints when making the decision to get a bird.

Birds have not become domesticated. They are still considered to be wild animals. The birds that are kept as pets are really no different than their wild ancestors. These birds are wild animals and need to be cared for in the proper manner. Yes, you may think that your bird is domesticated but it really is not. You have probably just raised enough trust in them. People are always fascinated by the colors of birds and feel they will be a good addition to their household not taking in the flact that birds need to have an enriched environment similar to theirs in the wild.

There are diseases that are found in birds that can be quite serious if a human were to contract them. We need to look at these when choosing to get a bird. These can be as serious as causing death in some cases. These diseases are Chlamydia and tuberculosis. There are other bird diseases can affect our food chain.

Parrots, lovebirds, parakeets, and cockatiels are very messy with respect to their environment. They eat and eliminate in a manner that shows us how close they are to their willd ancestors. They also vocalize significantly. The talking, chirping, and squawking are all important to the everyday life of a bird. This on the other hand may be undesireable in your household. These birds need a constant stimulation of communication for their lifes enrichment. Birds are also instinctively chewers. They love to shred wood of all sorts such as furniture and any other wooden pieces in the house. They will also chew other things in the house that can be very dangerous such as string, electric cords, and curtains. Parrots can live from 2- 5 decades. This makes the care for a bird lifelong and you need to realize that they will be in your life for a long time. Birds especially parrots have been compared to children in their emotional and socialization needs.

Birds also need to have the ability to fly, climb or swing. They also need an environment that will enrich them. They need to have the ability to support their inquisitiveness and activity.

The diet of birds must include grains, beans fruit, vegetables and also seeds or pellets can be included.

The birds need to have exposure to light. They need to be able to get sunlight which is rich in vitamin D which will help with vitamin A absorption. This is very important in keeping the birds system healthy. Birds also need a minimum of 8 hours sleep per night..

The air in the birds environment is critical in their health. The birds need to have clean air because they exchange all the air in their lungs with each breath. Birds should never be exposed to tobacco smoke, chemical fumes, or smoke from burning items. Exposure to certain items can lead to immediate death. Chronic exposure to bad air quality can lead to premature death.

The best word of advice for bird owners is to find a veterinarian that deals with only birds. The veterinarian can instruct you regarding husbandry issues and can educate you regarding the Do's and Don'ts on the care for your bird so theycan lead a happy and enriched life.
